Aquila Support Documentation

Background

This is the documentation for Aquila WordPress Theme, where you will find a detailed explanation on how to install and modify Aquila theme to suit your needs. Aquila is a portfolio theme, so you can use it to present any kind of work such as design, photography, print etc…

Extract and Activate the Theme

After you purchase and download the theme, make a backup copy of it. Then extract the zip file. Before you do anything else be sure you have WordPress all set up and ready. Upload the aquila_theme folder to your Themes folder (which you will find in wp-content).

In your WordPress administration panel, go to Appearance >> Themes to activate the Aquila theme.

Theme structure

Pages in Aquila theme are used as main navigation in header and footer, and portfolio and blog page are template pages meaning that their layout is different from the other pages like about, contact etc.. which are just regular static pages.

Posts are organized into two main categories, we suggest to make them portfolio and blog (or you can choose any of your categories in theme options page). Posts from portfolio category are listed on portfolio page and they are organized by tags, so you can have more than one tag for your work and filter them. Also 14 latest posts from this category are shown on main page as featured work.

Posts from blog category are shown on blog page and you can filter it by adding subcategories to blog category

Basic WordPress settings

If you have followed instructions from the top Aquila theme should be active now, and we’ll do basic settings like changing name, description etc… Name of your blog is in theme is located in left top corner and it’s a link to homepage. To change the name of your blog go to Settings – General and change blog title. Also here’s located blog description and you will find it in the bottom of the theme. Also we suggest using “pretty links” structure like in demo, so if you want to change that go to Settings – permalinks and choose the structure you like. Save everything.

If you want to have the option for replying to comments got to Settings – Discussions and enable threaded comments.

Adding pages

Now we will add Home, Portfolio, Blog and few static pages. First Home page, go to Pages – Add new, for the title put “Home”, on the right choose “Home page” from the template dropdown and for the order put 1 (if you want it as a first one in the menu) and publish it. Now open Settings – reading and for a front page select static page – Home that you just made. Next is About page, and it’s a static page so just put some title, content and choose order for it (like 2 in demo). Next is Portfolio page, and it’s a template page, so go to new page put Portfolio for title and choose Portfolio page for the template and 3 for the order. Services page is a static page like About, as well as Contact. And last page is blog, and it’s a template page so you have to choose Blog page on the right when you are making it.

If you would like to have a subtitle for the page (like on demo) add a custom field with “subtitle” for the name and value will be your subtitle

Adding categories

As it says in theme structure Aquila is organized in two main categories, so if you have a fresh installed version of WordPress let’s add some categories. Go to Posts – Categories, and add some categories like portfolio and blog. And we recommend to add some to add some subcategories for blog category since, Blog page is organized like that (you can do that just by selecting parent for it)

Theme options page

Open Appearance – Aquila options and we will do now some basic options for this theme. First you have to select portfolio and blog category (we suggest those two we’ve just made). Also you should change homepage title and services and testimonial text, fell free to use HTML like on demo. At the end there’s twitter field where you just have to put your twitter name.

Adding posts

And finally your portfolio is ready to be filled with work and blog posts. To add blog posts simple start writing a new posts and place it in blog category or/and some blog subcategory. To add portfolio post, again start writing new post, put it in portfolio category and tag it, and also to have image use custom field with name “image” and full image path like http://somesite.com/image.jpg. You can use any image size theme will resize it to look good. Also when writing portfolio post we suggest using strong HTML tag and <a class=”launch” href=”#”>Launch Project</a> to get launch button like on demo.

Changing ads

To change advertisement part we’ve made for you separate page called ads.php where you can change number, url, images and everything or use some script that will handle advertisement part
